A new federal program could put $2,000 to $10,000 toward a heat pump for your home, and now is the time to plan for it.
- $2 billion to retrofit one million homes across the country
- $2,000 to $10,000 toward a heat pump, per household
- 820,000 households the rebate is expected to reach
- Early 2027 is when Ottawa is aiming to open the program
Ottawa has announced a major new program to help Canadians upgrade their home heating, $2 billion to retrofit one million homes across the country.
The headline for homeowners is a new heat pump rebate for up to 820,000 households, paying $2,000 to $10,000 toward a heat pump, with approvals promised in as little as 24 hours once the program opens.
It matters because so many of our homes are ready for it. The government says seven million households across Canada still heat with oil, propane, or diesel, or rely on older electric baseboards and aging furnaces. A modern heat pump can cut energy bills, and it can make an older home much more attractive to buyers.
If you are thinking of buying an older home, or selling one with an older heating system, this is worth planning for now.
One important note
The program is not open for applications yet, and Ottawa is aiming for early 2027, with full eligibility details still to come. So this is the time to get quotes and plan, not the time to count on the money for this heating season.Thinking about what an upgrade like this could do for your home's value?
